I'm going to college in the fall and looking into getting a macbook pro. I've heard that they're very good computers with a lot less problems than PCs and that the new line has some upgrades that are worth the money. However, with the education discount, to get the least expensive 15' I would have to pay $1700 (plus tax). Even if I were to get a refurbished version (on the old processer) it would still be $1500 dollars. It’s also missing a Touch ID sensor. People looking for a cheap but good Apple laptop are better served by the 2018 MacBook Air, and people who need something faster than the Air should step up to the more up-to-date Touch Bar MacBook Pro. Apple still sells the 2017 non-Retina MacBook Air for $1,000. So my question is, is it worth it to save $200 and get an out of date processor? And whether it's $1700 or $1500, how can I justify spending that much money on a computer? Thanks for your input! The problem with Windows is well known. While we can get the same hardware reliability most if not all the problems with the OS comes down to us. We are the problem most of the time. We install trojans, we run registry cleaners or tinker with the services. And we don't backup. For the most part, Apple has a fine solution but even that won't help you if you install a trojan. I know this doesn't directly answer the question but let's go with this. Look at Apple's 1000 cycle battery. Now look at almost all other makers with their 300 cycle batteries. Now imagine the usual student that used their machine on the battery almost daily and wonders why they are having machine issues in year 2 or 3. Some thoughts from a Dad, and a marginally technical one at that. I have a HS grad in a few weeks.I am getting her a Macbook 13.3' new model for colleg. The cost difference is too great for a 15' and the feeling is that the 13.3 footprint will be nicer for college (she loves the size). Granted.no i5 chip and a little smaller screen. I have a son who is finishing 2nd yr of college.bought him a Macbook Pro 15' two years ago.great computer. He is trying to convert me.I'm still using a PC. I also have another daughter who finished college last year.owned a HP laptop. It was a pile of junk.repaired, motherboard, battery, etc. She, with her own money will be buying a new 13.3' Macbook in the next couple of weeks. She had a 15' screen before.and she likes the both the footprint and screen size of the new 13.3. So.my thoughts are, Macbook Pro unibody & 'quality', best bang is the 13.3' for college. Just be aware that Apple has suffered notorious problems with iMacs and Macbooks 2 years in a row. Cracked screens, screen with a yellow tinge to them, screens with lines through them, and defective video cards, prompting truckloads of recalls and forcing some customers to wait anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 MONTHS for a replacement. To top it all off, Apple refused to fix some of these problems initially, prompting multiple class-action lawsuits in the States from angry Mac customers. Naturally, Apple doesn't like to talk about those sorts of things. They would rather you believe that their quality is absolutely bulletproof and that Steve Jobs has the power to turn water into wine and part the Red Sea. Don't be afraid to do some research into the bad side of Apple. It's there, trust me. Check with school IT Department.do they support MACS? Becasue you will now use them for help.besides this CNET forum. Do you feel the need to buy all need SW to run on a MAC? That is more money 3. I am another dad and very frugal.why should I or you spend another $500-$1000 dollars when you will ahve to buy books, supplies, clothes and room and board. So my feeling is NO forget MACs.overprice and wait till you get your first 6 figure job. All manufacturers make good and bad Notebooks and YES per Consumers Reports.HP is having problems.try Dell, Toshiba and I believe in Acer. College is expensive.use your limited resources (money) wisely. Yes.the budget is the driver. I also would add.the Macbooks get the best resale dollar. And average in potential service costs/issues of poor quality laptops. My daughter's 2.5 yr old HP is worthless ($250-$300). Look on Craigslist and you'll see what older Mac laptops are fetching.I know.I've been looking at picking up a used one and for used laptops.they are not cheap. The 13' Macbook Pro is $1,100. If that is out of range on the budget, then look at a Windows 7 laptop. Windows 7 is supposed to be super. I would be very cautious on price & brand. I would pass on the prior PC brand recommendation.Dell, Toshiba and Acer. ![]() For a PC value with quality.buy an Asus. They have the next best rated service quality next to Apple. A Best Buy salesperson even made that Asus pitch with me a week ago. Yes.college is expensive.live within your means.pay cash.and don't buy more than you can afford or need.
